Porgy and Bess is an American masterpiece—a story that intertwines pride, prejudice, pathos, and passion through a jazz and blues-influenced score. Originally billed in 1935 as a "folk opera," Porgy and Bess introduced audiences to the classic Gershwin songs Summertime, I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’, I Loves You Porgy, My Man’s Gone Now, and It Ain’t Necessarily So, with enthralling choruses that stunned music and drama critics alike at its premiere. The original production featured an entire cast of classically trained African-American voices—a daring choice at the time. This fully-staged and beautifully sung production features memorable voices which bring the classic score and story to life.
